So you want to
promote an event at the 1in12 club?
The
1in12 club is a member-run social centre in the heart of Bradford
operating on three floors of a converted mill building.
On
the first floor is the "event" or "gig" floor where bands have access
to a stage, PA system and lights (details
here ).
In
the early
days of the club a thriving gig collective booked bands, arranged
events, and ensured a steady stream of "circuit" bands and local talent
had a place to play in Bradford free from the usual landlord/venue
hassles.
In
recent years
the club has increasingly turned the venue space over to individuals or
bands running their own events, without necessarily requiring an
ongoing commitment to the larger club "concept". Nonetheless, it is a
condition of hiring the event floor that the hirer is a member of the
club (legal reasons here).
Membership
costs £3.00/£5.00, and runs from May 1st to April
30th, each year. For
legal reasons membership applications cannot be accepted from under 18s.
If
you wish to
organise an event at the 1in12 club but cannot become a member due to
age we advise you to nominate a friend or relative to take membership
and be the "responsible person" behind the event.
Information
we need:
If
you call the
club to make a booking please make sure you get the name of the person
you speak to and leave us the following information:
Your
name and contact details (phone number(s) and email)
Description
of event and name of artistes
Membership
number
Confirmation
The
booking
will not be confirmed until we have received a deposit. Believe it or
not people do sometimes book events and then fail to show up, which is
particularly frustrating for other people trying to find a free Friday
or
Saturday night in our busy seasons (Spring and Autumn, apparently). If
we have not received your deposit you are liable to receive bothersome
phone calls from the club and risk having your event cancelled,
particularly if someone more organised wants the same night and has the
deposit available.
Costs
Booking
the
event floor costs £50.00, the usual deposit is
£20.00. Note
that of this money £10.00 goes into the club
donations pot
and is dispersed according to the whims of the club elders.
£15.00 goes to the "Sound Collective" – for the
cost of
maintaining the sound and lighting equipment. £25.00 goes to
the
sound engineer.
Hours
Ordinarily
the
sound engineer will arrive between 6.30 and 7.00 and will expect to be
leaving by 11.30. If you require access to the building earlier than
this you will need to make special arrangements with the club.
Likewise, if you're planning a "late event" you need to let us know in
advance.
Most
people
find that customers attending live music events tend to leave around
11.00 to catch the last buses and trains out of the city centre.
Age
limits
See
the
constitution elsewhere for the details of how and why the 1in12 is a
membership club. For the purposes of this document the important
information is this:
The
1in12 club is not a pub, it is a private member's club
We
cannot sell alcohol to non members
Membership
is cheap and easy if you are over 18
Unfortunately,
whilst wanting to help younger people seeking to arrange their own
events we are constrained by the law as to what we can actually do.
Many
licensees
are willing to turn a bit of a blind eye to the age of their customers
as they have a profit motive to think of, and probably a crippling loan
with the brewery to try and service. The 1in12 club is run by its
members in their own interests and we have nothing to gain by
encouraging under age drinking .
If
your
audience is drawn heavily from your school mates then please let us
know in advance and we will either close the bar on the event floor or
arrange to serve soft drinks only. You will still, obviously, need to
be a member yourself to book the room (see above). Please help us
continue to provide
these facilities by cooperating with us in this.
{N.B. in view of recent Friday-night disturbances in Albion Street
caused by under-age drinkers with bags of alcopops and supermarket
lager we will be checking membership cards at the front door to prevent
further damage to the premises.}
Please
note
that "guests" can be signed in by members, but that we would request
that that persons attending music events (either members or guests)
refrain from invading the members bar en masse when the dodgy 2nd
support band are on.
Fire
Exit
Immediately
adjacent to the stage is a fire exit. We request that you keep this
area clear of people and equipment at all times, for obvious reasons.
If you fail to do this you may find an irate sound engineer hurling
your equipment about to clear the passage.
Door
Staff
We
are unable
to provide door staff. If you are charging on the door you'll need to
organise this yourself. We will expect you to have members and guests
sign the member's book upon entry (more of that legal crap I'm afraid).
On Friday nights you'll need to come down to the front entrance (rather
than sitting in the doorway of the gig room) to ensure that your
audience are either paid-up members or signed-in guests.
Other
Facilities
Promoters
with
a good track record at the club may be able to gain access to the top
floor library/café by arrangement. This is usually to
provide a
range of hot food at all-day events (to prevent the crowd wandering off
when they get hungry) or as a "backstage" area for bands requiring
this. You'll need a second named member to accept responsibility for
this area and, realistically, you'll need to attend one of the
fortnightly member's meetings to outline your plans before this can be
agreed to. The top floor is run jointly by the Library Collective and
Café Collective and has no formal links with the running of
the
event floor. Access to the kitchen equipment will only possible for
previous experienced users of the kitchen.
(Hot
food is
available at the bar, though the range is limited and the bar staff
will probably try and encourage you to accept crisps or peanuts).
Promoting
your gig
We
want your
event to be a success. We will include your event on the list we keep
placed around the club, keep on our website and provide for local
listings magazines. If you provide posters we will give you the
blu-tack to stick the up around the club. We will not be able to fly
post for you, and we do not encourage it (the Council has been know to
clamp down on venues when this occurs).
(Flyposting
Bad. Hideous concrete consume-o-dromes Good. Go figure).
If
you have a website give us the details and we'll link to it from our
web listings.
Feel free to drop in on the members meetings if you have any questions
or suggestions.
